Vice President Kashim Shettima Reaffirms Nigeria's Commitment to Supporting African Refugees

During a meeting with a United Nations delegation at the State House on Wednesday, Vice President Kashim Shettima reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to providing refuge for Africans displaced by conflicts and natural disasters.

He assured the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) delegation that President Bola Tinubu is fully supportive of efforts to alleviate the suffering of displaced individuals within Nigeria and beyond its borders.

Shettima emphasized Nigeria’s continued commitment to accommodating African refugees, stating, “We will persist in providing a safe haven for our brother Africans displaced by conflict and natural disasters.”

He also expressed enthusiasm for new collaborative initiatives, particularly those focused on sustainable refugee resettlement, to prevent donor fatigue.

Raouf Mazou, UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, commended Nigeria’s handling of refugees and outlined the agency’s shift toward sustainable development strategies.

He discussed plans to leverage World Bank resources to support host communities and enhance refugee self-reliance, promoting a comprehensive approach to addressing the refugee crisis.
