Nigeria Urges De-escalation in Gulf Region Amid Rising Iran-Saudi Tensions

The Federal Government of Nigeria has called for immediate de-escalation in the Gulf region following heightened military tensions that threaten regional security and global economic stability.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa expressed deep concern over the escalating situation, particularly involving reported military actions by the United States and Israel against targets in Iran, as well as Iran’s subsequent retaliatory measures affecting some Gulf countries.

“Nigeria calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from actions that could intensify hostilities, and to prioritize dialogue over confrontation,” the statement read.

The government urged the involved parties to uphold respect for sovereignty, adhere to international law, and pursue peaceful dispute resolution through diplomatic channels.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to diplomacy, the statement emphasized that “respect for sovereignty and cooperative engagement remain essential to achieving durable peace and safeguarding global stability.”

Alongside the call for restraint, the Nigerian government issued a security advisory to its citizens residing in or visiting Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries, advising them to remain extremely vigilant, limit non-essential movement, avoid strategic or military areas, follow local directives, and maintain contact with Nigerian embassies in the region for consular support.

The advisory underscores the government’s priority on the safety and well-being of Nigerians abroad amid the volatile developments.
