Nigeria, US Inaugurate Defence Technical Working Groups to Boost Counterterrorism Cooperation

In a step towards enhancing bilateral security ties, Nigeria and the United States on Wednesday inaugurated Defence Institutional Technical Working Groups in Abuja as part of the 2026 Defence Roadmap.

The initiative aims to deepen collaboration in counterterrorism, institutional capacity building, and overall security cooperation between the two nations.

The working groups are expected to provide a structured framework for sustained engagement, focusing on practical strategies to combat emerging threats.

US delegate Cate Dave underscored the strategic importance of the new mechanism, stating that the initiative would strengthen institutional capacity and help deny terrorists safe havens across the region.

“Nigeria’s Francis Edosa, representing the Nigerian side, highlighted the anticipated gains in military readiness and response capabilities,” he said.

Both delegations placed strong emphasis on accountability, transparency, and long-term collaboration, describing the inauguration as a milestone in the evolving defence partnership.

Officials expressed confidence that the technical working groups would translate high-level commitments into tangible operational improvements on the ground.

The event reflects growing US support for Nigeria’s efforts to address insecurity, particularly in the face of persistent threats from terrorist groups and other criminal elements.
