Nigerian Customs Seizes Military Uniforms, Cannabis Worth N259 Million at Idiroko Border

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun Area Command, has intercepted a large quantity of military uniforms and illicit drugs valued at N259.68 million along the Idiroko border corridor.

Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, disclosed the seizure during a press briefing at the Command’s headquarters on Tuesday.

According to Afeni, operatives acting on credible intelligence intercepted a luxury bus without registration plates suspected of conveying contraband.

A thorough search of the vehicle revealed military camouflage items concealed in unmarked cartons, alongside high-grade cannabis.

The seized military uniforms included: 197 camouflage trousers and shorts; 5 camouflage two-piece sets; 32 mixed camouflage undergarments; 32 camouflage tops

Other items recovered were 154 strains of synthesised cannabis indica, popularly known as Canadian Loud, and seven parcels of Colorado cannabis.

Afeni expressed concern over the military uniforms, noting their potential use for criminal impersonation amid the country’s security challenges.

“The seizure of military uniforms is particularly worrying given the current security situation. Unauthorised possession of such uniforms is often linked to impersonation, where criminals disguise themselves as security personnel to commit crimes or facilitate the movement of contraband undetected,” he said.

He commended the dedication of his officers and called for stronger public support through timely intelligence to combat smuggling and insecurity.

The seized cannabis has been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action. Receiving the consignment, NDLEA’s Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Ganiyu Adeyoye, described the interception as a significant breakthrough, adding that suspects linked to the seizure will be prosecuted.
