The Nigerian government has taken a hard-line stance against the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests, freezing the bank accounts of suspected financial backers and placing them on a watchlist.
The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nan dap, announced Tuesday that individuals believed to be funding the demonstrations from abroad are now under surveillance.
“We have diaspora sponsors; they are on our watchlist. Any attempt they make to come into the country will be detected, and they will be apprehended and handed over to the appropriate authority,” Nandap stated.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has also been engaged to investigate the financial transactions of suspected sponsors. The secret police have reportedly frozen several accounts linked to the sponsors of the protests.
The protests, which have rocked several cities in Nigeria, began on Thursday, August 1st and would run until Saturday, August 10th. Organisations dubbed it “10 days of rage” to express frustration over issues such as corruption, economic hardship, and poor governance.
