Nigerians Enjoy Electricity at Lower Rates Than Neighboring Countries – TCN

According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), electricity is still cheaper in Nigeria compared to neighboring countries like Senegal, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

TCN Managing Director Sule Abdulaziz made this statement on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program, citing the challenges of electricity production and the impact of exchange rates.

Abdulaziz noted that Nigerians on Band A, who receive 20-22 hours of electricity daily, are paying more for power due to production costs. However, he assured that the country can achieve stable power supply within five years, given the significant improvements in electricity supply over the last year.

Interestingly, the federal government claims that only 1.5 million customers nationwide are affected by the tariff hike. This represents a small segment of consumers, primarily those enjoying 20 hours of power supply daily.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) raised electricity tariff for customers enjoying 20 hours power supply daily on April 3, 2024. The increase has been heavily criticized by many Nigerians, considering the immediacy of the tariff hike and the current hardship in the land.
