Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has sounded the alarm on Nigeria’s democratic future, urging political leaders to unite against the country’s slide into authoritarianism.
In a statement, Atiku noted that Nigeria’s political landscape has become increasingly corrosive, with opposition parties weakened and the ruling party manipulating internal processes to maintain power.
“The current state of our democracy is precarious, with opposition parties languishing in weakness,” Atiku said. “This has led to a troubling decline in electoral credibility, leaving our democracy vulnerable to manipulation.”

Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the last election, warned that Nigeria is on the brink of a one-party dictatorship. He called on politicians and statesmen of integrity to reclaim democracy from the shadows of oppression.
“Democracy has anchored our institutions in the rule of law, but we’ve yet to achieve satisfactory progress in fostering political inclusivity and ensuring free and fair elections,” Atiku stated.
He emphasized the need for a united effort to safeguard democracy, citing Nigeria’s founding fathers who united under a common cause to achieve independence through peaceful activism.
Atiku congratulated Nigerians on the 64th Independence anniversary, urging a collective endeavor to elevate the country to greatness.
“This milestone honors the indomitable spirit and unwavering resolve of Nigerians who believe in their homeland’s potential,” Atiku said. “Our nation has faced numerous challenges, but patriotic citizens and international allies have fortified our resolve.”

Atiku appealed to political leaders across party lines to forge a formidable coalition, providing Nigerians with a credible opposition capable of steering the nation towards a promising future.
“Nigeria’s democracy is at a crossroads. Let us unite to reclaim our democracy and ensure a brighter future for all,” Atiku concluded.
