‘No More War!’: Pope Leo XIV Calls for Peace in Ukraine, Gaza, Beyond in Historic First Sunday Blessing

Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful plea for peace in his first Sunday blessing. He urged world leaders to end conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and beyond. The pope denounced the “third world war in pieces” and proclaimed, “No more war!” He called for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war and direct talks to end the Ukraine conflict. Pope Leo XIV also praised a fragile ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

The pope’s message centered on peace, and he invoked the 80th anniversary of World War II’s end to underscore the urgency of his call.

He welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal for direct talks with Ukraine. Pope Leo XIV demanded humanitarian aid for Gaza’s exhausted civilian population and prayed for lasting peace.

The event drew an estimated 100,000 faithful to St. Peter’s Square. Pope Leo XIV sang the Regina Caeli, a Latin Marian antiphon, and wished all mothers a Happy Mother’s Day. His address reflected his vision for a unified and inclusive Church, emphasizing humility and service.

Pope Leo XIV’s Peruvian connection resonated with attendees, who celebrated his dual citizenship and cultural heritage. The crowd erupted in cheers as he appeared on the loggia, wearing a simple white cassock. The atmosphere was festive, with musicians playing classics and the crowd waving flags from around the world.
