No Room for Forgery: Engineering Trust in Nigeria’s Public Life

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has reaffirmed its commitment to combating fraud, forgery, and financial misconduct in Nigeria’s institutions, emphasizing proactive prevention over reactive measures.

In a strategic meeting held today at the NBA National Secretariat, NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, hosted the leadership of the Chartered Institute of Forensics and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria (CIFCFIN). The engagement focused on strengthening Nigeria’s defenses against fraud through forensic science, institutional collaboration, and capacity building.

President Osigwe stressed that Nigeria must shift from merely addressing fraud after damage has occurred to building robust systems that prevent it entirely. “Prevention is always safer, wiser, and less costly than investigation and prosecution,” he stated.

The discussions highlighted the critical role of forensic science in bolstering the criminal justice system, restoring institutional credibility, and protecting democracy—particularly with the 2027 general elections on the horizon.

Recurring incidents of certificate forgery and document manipulation have undermined public trust and embarrassed national institutions, underscoring the need for stronger gatekeeping mechanisms.

Osigwe commended CIFCFIN President Dr. Ilyasu B. Gashinbaki and his team for their efforts to establish forensic standards across Nigeria.

He noted that a modern justice system relies heavily on credible forensic analysis, including document verification, digital investigations, and financial tracing.

The NBA pledged full collaboration with CIFCFIN to raise awareness, train members of the Bench and Bar, and develop systems that ensure documents and transactions in Nigeria are trustworthy.

“Institutional credibility is not optional; it is foundational to the rule of law and democratic stability,” Osigwe declared.

This partnership comes at a pivotal time, as both organizations aim to foster a culture where integrity is verifiable, systems are reliable, and fraud is stopped before it takes hold.

The meeting aligns with broader efforts to integrate forensic expertise into public and electoral processes, ensuring greater transparency and confidence in Nigeria’s governance.
