Non-Academic Staff Unions of Nigerian Universities to Embark on Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have announced a nationwide strike, set to begin on Monday.

The strike is in protest of the Federal Government’s failure to pay four months’ worth of salaries to its members. Despite repeated pleas, the government has neglected to address the issue, leaving staff with no choice but to take industrial action.

The unions, representing over 100,000 non-academic staff across Nigerian universities, will withdraw all services, including administrative, technical, and maintenance support.

NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, stated that the government’s indifference has left them no option but to embark on this strike. SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, added that their members have suffered unbearable hardship due to unpaid salaries and they will not back down until their demands are met.

The strike is expected to disrupt university operations, affecting students’ academic activities and research. Students and parents fear potential delays in academic calendars and research projects.
