The leadership tussle within the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has taken a new turn, with Rev. Yakubu Pam addressing recent developments and misrepresentations surrounding the ongoing court case against Rev. Joseph Hayab, who is accused of parading himself as Northern CAN chairman.
In a press statement issued on September 26, 2025, Rev. Pam clarified the status of the legal proceedings, dispelling rumors of an indefinite adjournment. “At the last court sitting on September 18, 2025, counsels made their submissions, and the case was adjourned for ruling,” he stated.
“The Honourable judge announced that the court would communicate the judgment date once ready.” Rev. Pam reaffirmed his commitment to respecting the judicial process and urged patience as the court works to deliver justice.

Addressing the duration of the case, Rev. Pam noted that while the process has been protracted, he remains confident in the judiciary. “We are not worried. The court operates within its procedures, and we believe justice, no matter how long it takes, will prevail,” he said.
Rev. Pam expressed concern over Rev. Joseph Hayab’s continued public posturing as Northern CAN chairman despite the unresolved court case.
“It is regrettable that while the matter is sub judice, Rev. Hayab continues to parade himself as chairman,” he said. Drawing an analogy, he added, “When a thief snatches a bag and runs, it does not make him the rightful owner. Possession does not confer legitimacy.”
Speaking to the Christian community and political stakeholders, Rev. Pam called for steadfastness and caution. He urged Northern Christians and church leaders to remain prayerful and hopeful, assuring them that “these trials are temporary, and the truth shall prevail.”

To politicians and office holders, he issued a stern warning: “Be wary of the desperation and deceit of individuals moving from one government house to another in the name of Northern CAN.” He clarified that “there is no recognized chairman of Northern CAN until the court delivers its judgment.”
Rev. Pam emphasized that Northern CAN’s mission is not political but spiritual, aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence and supporting Christians facing unique challenges in Northern Nigeria. He called on Nigerians, the church, and the media to reject actions that foster division within the body of Christ.
