Northern Nigeria Plunged into Darkness as 330kV Power Line Fails

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported a widespread power outage in northern Nigeria due to a fault in its 330kV Ugwaji-Apir Double Circuit transmission lines.

The TCN General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, explained that the lines tripped at approximately 4:53 am and 4:58 am, resulting in a total loss of 468 MW. This has forced a power outage affecting communities in the North-east, North-west, and parts of North-central Nigeria.

Teams of linesmen from Apir and Enugu transmission sub-regions have been dispatched to identify and fix the issue. However, they faced challenges due to difficult terrain and security concerns. The team from Enugu was initially hindered by the sit-at-home directive in the South-East on October 21st and 22nd, 2024.

The TCN is working to resolve the issue as soon as possible to restore power supply to affected areas

Currently, supply has been restored to the 132kV transmission line from New Haven to Apir, but the 330kV lines remain out of service, impacting power supply in the Northern region. Additionally, the TCN Shiroro-Mando transmission line is down due to security reasons, exacerbating the power outage.

The TCN is working to resolve the issue as soon as possible to restore power supply to affected areas.
