Renowned broadcaster and elder statesman, Alhaji Mohammed Rabiu Bako, has sounded the alarm on the dire situation in Northern Nigeria. In a presentation to Nigerian leaders, Bako highlighted the region’s crippling insecurity, poverty, unemployment, and economic decay.
Once the country’s food basket, the North now struggles to feed itself. Economic institutions have collapsed, roads are in disarray, and youth unemployment has created a fertile ground for insecurity. With 65% of Nigeria’s poor residing in the North, poverty levels vary significantly across states.
Banditry has increased by 731% between 2018 and 2022, with 13,485 deaths recorded. The economic consequences are dire, disrupting agricultural activities and trades.

The situation in Northern Nigeria has reached a boiling point, with experts warning of catastrophic consequences if urgent action is not taken. Alhaji Mohammed Rabiu Bako’s call to action echoes the sentiments of many concerned citizens.
“The region’s decay is a national security threat,” said Bako. “We must rebuild our economy, address poverty, and create opportunities for our youth.”
Bako urges Northern governors to rebuild failed industries, create jobs, and address poverty. He emphasizes collaboration among stakeholders and tackling impunity and corruption.
