NUC Approves 16 New Programs for MAU Yola, Paving Way for Tech, Media Innovation

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has given the green light for Modibbo Adama University (MAU) in Yola to launch 16 new undergraduate programs starting in the 2025/2026 academic session. This approval is set to expand academic horizons, equipping students with skills in emerging fields like cybersecurity, data science, and journalism.

The NUC’s endorsement, detailed in a letter dated January 15, 2026, and signed by Director of Academic Planning Abubakar on behalf of Executive Secretary Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, confirms that MAU has met all regulatory benchmarks.

Addressed to the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the correspondence allocates an initial admission quota of 800 students across the programs, signaling confidence in the university’s capacity to deliver quality education.

Among the approved offerings are humanities-focused degrees such as B.A. Arabic, B.A. Islamic Studies, and B.A. English, designed to deepen cultural and linguistic studies. On the technology front, the lineup includes B.Sc., Cyber Security, B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Information and Communication Technology, B.Sc. Information Systems, and B.Sc. Software Engineering – programs poised to address Nigeria’s growing demand for digital expertise amid rising cyber threats and tech-driven economies.

The sciences are equally bolstered with B.Sc. Environmental Management, B.Sc. Meteorology, B.Sc. Forensic Science, B.Sc. Applied Geophysics, and B.Sc. Petroleum Chemistry, which could play a pivotal role in tackling environmental challenges and advancing resource exploration in the region. Rounding out the list are media-centric degrees: B.Sc. Mass Communication, B.Sc. Broadcasting, and B.Sc. Journalism and Media Studies, aimed at nurturing the next generation of storytellers and communicators in an era of digital media dominance.

NUC has urged JAMB to integrate these programs into its admission processes, ensuring seamless enrollment and granting MAU full privileges for student intake.

This move not only diversifies the university’s curriculum but also aligns with national priorities in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).

At the helm of this achievement is MAU’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Umar, whose visionary leadership has been instrumental in steering the institution toward excellence since taking office.

Under his guidance, MAU has pursued strategic initiatives to enhance infrastructure, faculty development, and partnerships, culminating in this expansion.

Education stakeholders in Adamawa State have hailed the development as a game-changer. “This is a watershed moment for our youth,” said a local education advocate, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “These programs will not only create job opportunities but also position Adamawa as a hub for innovation in Nigeria.”
