Numan Elders Raise Concerns Over Alleged Irregularities Ahead of LG Polls

A group of elders in Numan Local Government Area of Adamawa State has expressed concern over alleged irregularities ahead of the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, calling on electoral authorities and security agencies to ensure a transparent and credible process.

The elders, under the umbrella of the Numan Vision Forum, made their position known during a press briefing in Numan, where they urged the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC) to conduct the elections in a manner that inspires public confidence.

Speaking on behalf of the forum, its chairman, Prof. Alikodon Voh, said the group was not aligned with any political party or candidate but was motivated by the need to protect the integrity of the electoral process and uphold the democratic rights of citizens.

According to him, developments observed in the lead-up to the election have raised concerns about possible irregularities, prompting the elders to draw the attention of relevant authorities before voting begins.

Prof. Voh stressed that addressing any perceived shortcomings ahead of the polls would help prevent disputes and contribute to maintaining peace and stability in the area.

He called on ADSIEC to remain impartial and strictly adhere to electoral guidelines, while urging security agencies to provide a level playing field for all candidates and political parties participating in the election.

The forum also appealed to political actors and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and avoid actions capable of disrupting the electoral process.

The elders emphasized that credible local government elections are critical to strengthening grassroots democracy and fostering public trust in governance. They noted that the legitimacy of elected officials depends largely on the transparency and fairness of the electoral process.

“We are not against any candidate or political party. Our concern is that the election must be free, fair and acceptable to all. The people’s votes should count, and the outcome should genuinely reflect their wishes. That is the foundation of democracy and peaceful coexistence,” Prof. Voh said.

The forum further urged electoral officials, security agencies, community leaders and political parties to work together to ensure a peaceful, transparent and credible election in Numan Local Government Area.
