Twenty-six years ago some Adamawa Youths who traveled to Abuja to show their solidarity when Nigeria was suspended from the Commonwealth of Nations had a fatal accident.
The accident claimed the lives of twelve of them in the vehicle boarded to Yola along Akwanga-Jos road, on the 21st November 1995.
Today Youths in their numbers gathered at the Adamawa Youth Memorial Center, Jambutu Yola and mourned, prayed for their souls to find God’s eternal rest.
The Youth under the auspices of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Adamawa state chapter weeps the sudden demise of their counterparts through a mishap ghastly motor accident.
The NYCN Adamawa Chairman, Amb. Line K. Delo signed a press statement mourning the passed Union officials of the state, describing them as legends and heroes who lived a well impactful life.
“True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic,” said the legendary three-time Grand Slam winner, as quoted in Tennis magazine. “It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.
“They who for their country die shall fill an honored grave. For glory lights, the soldier’s tomb and beauty weep the brave.” The statement read
In a deeper expression of their sorrows, the statement further read that:
“Fellow Youths of Adamawa State and Nigeria, today the 21st day of November 2021 mark the 26th year that some Youth leaders including the Chairman NYCN Adamawa State Chapter, the Secretary, and other leaders twelve (12) in number died in a ghastly motor accident
” Sometimes, in August 1996, after the execution of Ken Saro Wiwa and Nine other Ogoni leaders’ conviction for sedition by a Military Tribunal, Nigeria was suspended from the commonwealth membership. In a show of solidarity, the then leaders of the Youth Council together with their counterparts across the country and other patriotic Nigerians went to Abuja to stage a peaceful demonstration in support of the Federal Government While returning to Yola, on the 21 November 1995 those Youth leaders involved in a ghastly motor accident along Akwanga- Jos road.
“Due to that catastrophe, the State and indeed the whole Country were thrown into mourning. Dignitaries flew into Yola to Commensurate with the families of the deceased, and the government of the State. Those Youth leaders were not only given a heroic burial by the government but are also dedicated to a place to immortalize them. Hence the formation of the Youth Memorial Centre out of the Works Training Centre and handed over to the next leader of the Youth Council to serve as a rallying point for all Youths activities in the State.
“We will always remember that those twelve (12) vibrant Youths leaders died in the defense of our Country. They never chose to be martyrs out of volition but fate chose them to pay this supreme price so that as Nigerians, we will earn and maintain our respect as a sovereign nation. All they deserve is to allow their memories to linger on. ” The labor of our heroes past…” the Youth memorial Centre is and will always be our cherished memory of our departed gallant leaders.”
