The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Shu’aibu Ibrahim has charged prospective Corps members deployed to Taraba State to participate actively in all the skills acquisition programs designed by the scheme while in the camp.
The DG made the call in an address during the opening ceremony of the 2021 Batch “C” Orientation Course at the NYSC permanent site in Sibre, Ardo Kola local government area of the state.
Represented by the Taraba state Coordinator of the scheme, Mr. Anthony Nzoka, Ibrahim encouraged them to ensure healthy interactions, exchange of ideas and build lasting friendships with a view to advancing the progress of a united Nigeria.
He advised them to familiarize themselves with the content of both NYSC act and its bylaws as well as encouraged them to continue to demonstrate high level of discipline and enthusiasm through out the exercise as they exhibited so far.
Ibrahim also reminded the Corps members that the regimented nature of the orientation camp is intended to further instil discipline and build their resilience, while he cautioned them against indulgence in drug abuse, cultism and other social vices.
“You are expected to comply strictly with the set rules and regulations and be obedient to your corps officials” he stressed.
The DG, however, called on the corps members to use the social media only for promoting unity and other positive purposes rather than rumour peddling and promotion of hatred as well as be security conscious at all times.
According to him, “it is no longer news that white collar jobs are hard to come by, saying that for this reason, the empowerment of corps members for self employment and wealth creation has become a major area of focus for the scheme since 2012.
“You will from this moment be availed if the opportunity through our skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development program. I’m happy to inform you that many of your predecessors who embraced vocational and entrepreneurial training on the SAEC platform are now successful business owners”
Brigadier General Shu’aibu Ibrahim, therefore, encouraged the corps members to stay off the queue of job seekers by choosing from the various skills sets and participate fully in the training sessions.
“On our part, we shall continue to work with the relevant stakeholders including financial institutions to enable e you to actualize your business dreams. At this juncture, I wish to remind you of the need to continue to comply with the covid-19 prevention protocols throughout the orientation period, in particular.
Concerned about the covid-19 pandemic, the NYSC DG, emphasized the need for corps members to ensure physical distancing and wearing of facemask as well as make good use of hand washing facilities provided at strategic locations amongst other preventive measures.
While commending the Presidential steering committee on covid-19 and the NCDC for the continuous provision of rapid diagnostic test kits and other sensitization materials for usage in all orientation camps across the nation.
Some corps members in an interview appreciated the federal government for its commitment toward the sustainability of the scheme and assured of their resolve to abide by the rules and regulations of the camp as well as be good ambassadors wherever they are posted to.
