NYSC Postpones Niger Orientation Camp as Windstorm Damage Forces Emergency Renovation

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has postponed the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream I Orientation Course for prospective corps members deployed to Niger State following extensive damage to the state’s orientation camp caused by a devastating windstorm.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the NYSC management said the postponement became necessary to allow ongoing renovation and rehabilitation work at the orientation camp in Paiko, which suffered significant structural damage during a severe rainstorm and windstorm earlier this year.

According to the scheme, the Niger State Government is currently undertaking urgent repairs to restore the facility and ensure it meets the safety and welfare requirements for incoming corps members.

“The Management of the National Youth Service Corps wishes to inform Prospective Corps Members deployed to Niger State for the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream I Service Year that their Orientation Course has been postponed until a later date,” the statement said.

The NYSC explained that the decision was taken in the interest of the safety and comfort of prospective corps members, noting that rehabilitation efforts at the camp are still underway.

To minimize disruption to the national service programme, the management disclosed that arrangements are being made to secure an alternative venue for the orientation exercise. It assured affected corps members that a new commencement date and other relevant details would be communicated once necessary preparations are completed.

The scheme expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the postponement and appealed for understanding from prospective corps members and their families.

The development follows the destructive windstorm that struck the Paiko Orientation Camp on April 25, 2026, causing widespread damage to several critical facilities within the camp.

Among the structures affected were the male corps members’ hostels, the multi-purpose hall, the camp kitchen, staff quarters, and parts of the State Coordinator’s residence. While no fatalities were recorded, two individuals sustained minor injuries and were treated and discharged from a medical facility.

The incident triggered swift intervention by both the NYSC and the Niger State Government, with authorities prioritizing repairs and safety upgrades before the resumption of orientation activities.

The postponement is expected to affect hundreds of prospective corps members assigned to the state, as stakeholders await further announcements on the revised orientation schedule and venue arrangements.
