The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has issued a stern warning to the public to dismiss claims of a newly elected leadership for the Christian body, labeling such assertions as fraudulent. In a strongly worded statement released Tuesday night, Elder Sunday Oibe, Secretary General of Northern CAN, reaffirmed that the executive leadership under Rev. Yakubu Pam remains firmly in place and that anyone claiming otherwise is an impostor.

The controversy stems from a recent gathering in Abuja, where a group calling itself the “Christians Elders of the North” allegedly conducted an election to appoint new leaders for Northern CAN. Oibe condemned the move as illegal, arguing that no external group has the authority to orchestrate elections for an established organization like CAN. “We find it deeply troubling that one group would attempt to conduct elections for another. Such actions are not only improper but also unlawful,” Oibe stated.
The Secretary General accused the newly formed group of pursuing a deliberate agenda to undermine Northern CAN’s leadership for selfish gain. “Their action is not only unlawful and mischievous but is calculated to ridicule the Christian body,” he said, urging the public to disregard the purported election entirely. “The executive of Northern CAN is headed by Rev. Yakubu Pam. Anybody parading himself as the Chairman of Northern CAN is an impostor and a desperado,” Oibe declared emphatically.
According to the statement, the “Christians Elders of the North” appears to have been recently established with the apparent intent of destabilizing Northern CAN. “While we respect everyone’s right to freedom of association and the formation of groups, we strongly oppose any organization created with the intent of destabilizing or undermining others,” Oibe noted. He challenged the group to cease their “undemocratic and self-serving actions” and instead engage constructively by joining CAN and participating in its legitimate election processes when the time comes.
Oibe also called for calm among Northern CAN members, encouraging them to “pray against forces that are out to cause confusion” within the association. The statement concluded with a plea for unity and vigilance to protect the integrity of the Christian body in the region.
