One person was reportedly killed, six seriously injured and 30 trapped when a mine site collapsed in Galkogo village of Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

A firm, African Minerals and Logistics Limited, is said to be operating the site.

The Manager of the site, Alhaji Ibrahim Ishaku, was also said to be among the workers trapped in the mine pit.

Niger state Emergency Management Agency has confirmed the incident.

NSEMA said the mine pit collapsed because of the rainfall impacts that had softened the soil.

The Agency added that those who attempted to rescue those trapped in the pit had to run for their lives because the mine kept collapsing.

He added that they were able to rescue only six people who were seriously injured.

NSEMA Director General, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba Arah, said due to insecurity bedeviling the environment, information on the incident was very scanty.

Arah said rescue operations and excavators have been deployed to the scene.
