Ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have expressed gratitude to their supporters in their first social media post from a US prison, saying they feel “steadfast” and “serene.”
The message was shared on Maduro’s X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday. It read: “We are well, steadfast, serene and in constant prayer. We have received your communications, your messages, your emails, your letters and your prayers. Every word of love, every gesture of affection, every expression of support fills our souls and strengthens us spiritually.”
The couple added: “We feel a deep admiration for our people’s ability to remain united in difficult times, to express love, awareness, and solidarity, within Venezuela and beyond our borders.”
However, it remains unclear who posted the message on their behalf, as Maduro and his wife have reportedly been held without access to the internet or newspapers since their capture.
Maduro and Flores were seized by US forces in a nighttime raid on their compound in Caracas in early January 2026.
They have been detained for nearly three months at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, a federal prison known for challenging conditions.
A source close to the Venezuelan government told AFP that Maduro reads the Bible daily and is still addressed as “president” by some fellow detainees. He is allowed only limited phone communication with family and lawyers — up to 15 minutes per call.
Maduro’s son, Nicolás Maduro Guerra (known as “Nicolasito”), has previously said his father is calm, in good spirits, and even exercising while in custody. Maduro has described himself as a “prisoner of war.”
The former leader has pleaded not guilty to serious US charges, including “narco-terrorism” conspiracy, cocaine importation, and possession of machine guns and destructive devices.
He last appeared in court on Thursday, where a judge rejected a defense motion concerning his legal fees.
Maduro, who led Venezuela since 2013, was removed from power following the US operation. Delcy Rodríguez, his former vice president, is now acting president and has been implementing significant changes, including an amnesty for political prisoners and reforms to oil and mining sectors in line with US expectations.
The United States and Venezuela recently restored diplomatic ties, signaling a thaw in relations.
The social media post comes as Maduro’s trial on the drug-related charges looms, with potential life imprisonment if convicted.
Supporters in Venezuela and abroad continue to demand his release, while the interim government under Rodríguez grapples with the country’s deep economic crisis despite its vast oil reserves.
