Oyo Teachers Protest Colleagues’ Abduction, Killing

Teachers in Ogbomoso on Monday shut down classroom activities and staged a peaceful protest to the TESCOM office over the abduction and killing of their colleagues by gunmen.

The protest followed the May 15 abduction incident at Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele in Oriire Local Government Area, where gunmen abducted the school principal, seven teachers, and an unspecified number of students.

One of the abducted teachers, believed to be a Mathematics teacher, was later killed by his captors. The perpetrators reportedly filmed the execution and circulated the video online.

Carrying placards, the protesting teachers demanded improved security around schools and called on the government to intensify efforts to rescue the remaining victims still in captivity.

Reacting to the incident, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, confirmed the killing of one teacher during a security meeting on Sunday. He expressed condolences to the deceased teacher’s family and sympathised with the affected families.

The governor stated that the state government is deploying both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to secure the release of the remaining hostages. He also assured that the government will fully cover the medical bills of security operatives, including soldiers and Amotekun personnel, who were injured by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) during rescue operations.

The protest reflects growing concern among education stakeholders and residents over the safety of schools and communities in parts of Oyo State.
