Police Arrest Sowore at Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial in Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force arrested human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore on Thursday during the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The arrest was announced by Deji Adeyanju, a lawyer and fellow activist, who shared the development on social media. Adeyanju wrote, “BREAKING: Omoyele Sowore just arrested at the Federal High Court by the Nigerian Police. When will the Nigerian Police stop acting jobless?”

Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, had attended the court proceedings to show solidarity with Kanu, who is facing terrorism charges brought by the Federal Government.

Earlier this week, Sowore led a protest in Abuja demanding Kanu’s release. The demonstration, which began at Unity Fountain and proceeded toward the National Assembly and Presidential Villa, saw participation from several activists and supporters of the IPOB leader.

Among those present were Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, and his brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, who carried placards with messages such as “#FreeNnamdiKanuNow” and “#StopPersecutingNnamdiKanu.” The protesters accused the government of continuously violating Kanu’s fundamental rights.

Security operatives reportedly dispersed the protest, arresting several participants, including Ejimakor and Emmanuel Kanu.

Following the incident, Sowore accused the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, of orchestrating the crackdown to suppress dissent and intimidate activists.

As of the time of filing this report, the police have not released an official statement regarding Sowore’s arrest or his current whereabouts.
