Pope Francis has been hospitalized in Rome for tests and treatment for bronchitis, the Vatican announced on Friday.
The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been experiencing breathlessness in recent days and has delegated officials to read his speeches, was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after his morning audiences.
According to the Vatican, he was hospitalized for “some necessary diagnostic tests and to continue treatment for ongoing bronchitis in a hospital setting.”
Francis, who had part of one of his lungs removed as a young man, has struggled with breathing difficulties for over a week, frequently requesting aides to read his speeches aloud on his behalf.

In March 2023, he was hospitalized for three nights with bronchitis, which was successfully treated with antibiotics. Later that year, in December, he had to cancel his scheduled visit to Dubai for the United Nations COP28 climate change conference due to another episode of bronchitis.
The Argentine pontiff has dealt with multiple health issues in recent years, including knee and hip pain, an inflamed colon, and surgery for a hernia.
