Inspite of the 10 days, 88-year-old Pope Francis has so far spent on admission at the Gemelli hospital, Rome, his health condition remains critical.
On Sunday evening, the Holy See Press Office, Vatican City, Rome, disclosed this in its medical update on the Pope’s condition.
Though in a critical situation, the statement noted that the Catholic pontiff had yet to experience any further respiratory crisis, adding that he remained alert and well-oriented.
Pope Francis, on Sunday, participated in the Holy Mass, in an apartment on the tenth floor of the hospital, alongside those attending to him since his admission.
On February 14, Pope Francis was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital, Rome, following worsening bronchitis, with the first diagnostic tests indicating he had a respiratory tract infection.
The octogenarian Catholic Pontiff, reported having breathing difficulties during his meetings on Friday before he was rushed to the hospital.
Stating the Pope’s current state of health, Sunday’s Holy See press office’s statement read, “The condition of the Holy Father remains critical, but since yesterday evening, he has not experienced any further respiratory crises.
“He received two units of concentrated red blood cells with beneficial effects, and his hemoglobin levels have risen.
“The thrombocytopenia remains stable; however, some blood tests show early, mild renal insufficiency, which is currently under control.
“High-flow oxygen therapy continues through nasal cannulas. The Holy Father remains alert and well-oriented.”
Meanwhile, the church at masses on Sunday enjoined parishioners to continue to pray for the Pope’s quick recovery and continuous good health.
