In a shocking move, Alhaji Ali Dahiru Zungeru, the Sarkin Hausawan of Ibadanland, Oyo State, has approved the removal of Malam Haruna Maiyasin, also known as Sarkin Sasa, as the Mai’unguwan Sasa of the Hausa community in Akinyele Local Government Area. This decision, announced on Monday, October 21, 2024, comes after allegations of abuse of power, gross misconduct, and disregard for emirate laws.

The continued stay of Maiyasin as District Head was deemed capable of igniting a crisis in the area, prompting his removal

According to Hon. Alhaji Yahaya Ali, spokesman for the Council of Sarkin Hausawan of Ibadanland, Maiyasin’s actions created disunity among the Arewa community in southern Nigeria, particularly through the illegal conferment of chieftaincy titles for selfish interests. The continued stay of Maiyasin as District Head was deemed capable of igniting a crisis in the area, prompting his removal.

Maiyasin’s appointment as Mai’unguwa District Head dates back to 1983, during the reign of Alhaji Shu’aibu Dikko Zungeru III, with the goal of maintaining peace, unity, and justice among the Hausa/Arewa in Sasa area. However, his constant disrespect and unlawful confirmation of chieftaincy titles without recourse to the Sarkin Hausawa of Ibadanland led to his removal.

This development comes after a previous attempt to suspend Maiyasin was rejected by the Council of Arewa Traditional Rulers and Chiefs in the 17 southern states, citing lack of moral and constitutional authority by Zungeru. The situation highlights the complex dynamics within the Hausa community in Ibadan land.
