In a significant move to bolster regional security, President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno of Chad welcomed a high-level delegation from Nigeria on Sunday. The meeting, held in the capital N’Djamena, reaffirmed the strategic partnership between the two nations amid rising security challenges in the turbulent Lake Chad Basin.

The Nigerian delegation, led by National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, included key military figures such as Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Intelligence Major General Emmanuel Undiandeye, and Force Commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) Major General Ali Salau, among other senior officials.

Ribadu delivered a written message from Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, extending condolences for the recent tragic terrorist attack on Barkaram Island, which resulted in the deaths of several Chadian soldiers. This gesture underscored Nigeria’s commitment to solidarity with Chad, regarded as a crucial ally in regional security initiatives.

The discussions concentrated on enhancing security cooperation, with both sides promising to intensify joint military operations against jihadist groups that have been increasingly active in the region. Ribadu characterized the talks as “fruitful,” emphasizing Nigeria’s determination to collaborate closely with Chad to confront shared security threats.

General Musa reinforced this message, highlighting plans to improve military interoperability between the two nations through coordinated operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks.

Chad and Nigeria have historically shared a deep connection, and the leaders expressed their commitment to further strengthening this strategic alliance. A Chadian official remarked, “This hearing confirms that the destinies of Abuja and N’Djamena are intertwined,” adding that the discussions reflect a renewed focus on bilateral and multilateral initiatives.
