President Tinubu Nominates Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as CBN Deputy Governor

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), subject to confirmation by the Senate.

The nomination aligns with Section 8(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which governs appointments to the apex bank’s leadership.

Yuguda’s nomination comes after the recent redeployment of the former Deputy Governor, Mr. Bala Bello, who was appointed as Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy.

President Tinubu has urged the nominee and other appointees to carry out their duties with renewed dedication, professionalism, and a strong focus on Nigeria’s economic stability and growth.

Lamido Abubakar Yuguda brings extensive experience in finance, banking, and regulation. He most recently served as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from 2020 to 2024, where he led efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s capital markets through regulatory reforms and enhanced investor protection.

A seasoned professional, Yuguda began his career in 1984 at the Central Bank of Nigeria as a Senior Supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department.

He later served as an economist in the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 1997 to 2001 before returning to the CBN. He rose through the ranks and retired in 2016 after six years as Director of the Reserve Management Department.

Yuguda holds a B.Sc. in Accountancy from Ahmadu Bello University (1983) and a Master’s degree in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom (1991).

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder.
