President Tinubu Reassures Nigerians: “Our Unity Remains Unshakable” Amid Escalating Security Challenges

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s resolve to overcome insecurity, declaring that the nation’s unity “remains unshakable” despite a recent surge in terrorist attacks and killings across several states.

The assurance came during an interfaith breaking of the fast (Iftar) hosted at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, where the President engaged religious and traditional leaders from across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu acknowledged the heightened desperation of terrorist groups, attributing their intensified violence to heavy military pressure.

“Yes, we are challenged; the terrorists are very desperate now because they are getting barraged and defeated, they leave trails of blood in their wake,” he said. “But I assure you of one thing: Nigeria will never surrender. We are not discouraged. We are going to win and win well.”

The President’s remarks arrive against a backdrop of persistent violence in the North East, North West, and other regions.

Recent reports highlight deadly assaults by groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP, including coordinated attacks in Borno State that resulted in significant civilian and military casualties, abductions, and destruction of property.

These incidents, part of a broader wave of insecurity since late 2025 including a nationwide security emergency declaration in November 2025 have claimed numerous lives and displaced communities, fueling public concern and international scrutiny.

President Tinubu commended religious and traditional leaders for their pivotal roles in fostering peace, moral guidance, and community stability.

He highlighted the symbolic importance of the interfaith gathering during Ramadan and the overlapping Lenten season, urging continued collaboration to promote peaceful coexistence.

The President also provided an optimistic update on the economy, stating that his administration had “turned the corner” and rescued Nigeria from the brink of bankruptcy inherited upon taking office.

“The economy is getting better. Pensioners are getting their relief gradually. We have saved Nigeria from bankruptcy,” he noted, adding that no state governor now struggles to borrow funds for worker salaries a reference to past fiscal strains.

He pledged sustained investment in key sectors like agriculture and education to build a lasting legacy, while calling on citizens to maintain hope and unity.

“I am just grateful… that I have been given the opportunity to serve,” Tinubu said. “All I can do is promise that I will continue to be faithful in discharging my duty.”

Representing Islamic leadership, the Etsu Nupe, Yahaya Abubakar standing in for the Sultan of Sokoto and the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) expressed appreciation for the President’s inclusive hosting and prayed for divine guidance, protection, and peaceful coexistence.

On the Christian side, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, representing the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), assured the administration of the church’s support in transforming the economy and bolstering national security.

The event drew attendees from diverse regions, underscoring efforts to bridge religious and ethnic divides amid ongoing threats.

President Tinubu’s message echoes previous assurances to security forces, including during a separate interfaith Iftar with military personnel earlier in March, where he emphasized that troops’ sacrifices would not be in vain as operations degrade terrorist capabilities.

As Nigeria navigates these complex challenges, the President’s call for unwavering unity and collective resolve has resonated in official circles, though critics continue to demand faster, more tangible progress on the ground to curb the violence and restore confidence among affected populations.

The administration maintains that intensified military operations, combined with socio-economic reforms, will ultimately prevail.
