On June 25, 2024, students of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi residing in the Gwallameji community staged a protest and blocked the federal highway along the Bauchi-Dass road.
The protest erupted following a robbery incident where hoodlums broke into their residences, robbing and injuring Cletus Chomo, a 50-year-old resident of Sarauniya Lodge, Gwallameji.
Ngi Genesis, a first-year Crime Management student, told TG News that the recent protests have disrupted the academic calendar. He urged the school management to enhance security on campus, citing ongoing criminal activities that violate students’ rights. Genesis emphasized the need for thorough investigations into these criminal acts within the institution.
In response to the situation, a police team from ‘E’ Division, along with tactical units, was swiftly deployed to the area. The police successfully brought the situation under control. Contrary to some unsubstantiated reports, the injured victim, who was stabbed during the incident, was immediately taken to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital for medical attention and is currently responding to treatment.
The Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, CP Auwal Musa Mohammed psc, emphasized the need for parents and guardians to guide their children and wards away from activities that could lead to public disorder. He also issued a stern warning to individuals with criminal intent to desist from actions that disrupt public peace and safety. The Commissioner directed area commanders and DPOs to implement security measures to identify, disarm, arrest, and prosecute those involved in attempts to disrupt law and order.
The Bauchi State Police Command encourages citizens to support the police in the fight against crime and criminality. Law-abiding citizens are urged to go about their activities without fear and report any suspicious movements to the nearest police station.
