Qatar Airways Flight with 260 Onboard Makes Emergency Landing in Lagos After Mid-Air Technical Fault

A Qatar Airways passenger aircraft carrying 248 passengers and 12 crew members (totaling 260 people) executed a flawless emergency landing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos on Friday following a sudden technical fault while airborne in Nigerian airspace.

The incident, which could have turned tragic, ended without any injuries, fatalities, or significant damage to the aircraft, thanks to the professionalism of the pilot and swift coordination among emergency responders.

According to a detailed statement from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), signed by Permanent Secretary Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency received distress alerts via its 767/112 toll-free emergency lines shortly after the fault developed.

The LASEMA Response Team (LRT), alongside other multi-agency responders including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS, and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) personnel, immediately mobilized. Emergency teams stood by on extreme high alert along the runway as the pilot guided the aircraft to a safe touchdown.

“The pilot executed a safe landing on the runway at Murtala Mohammed International Airport with LASEMA Response Team and other emergency responders standing by on extreme high alert,” the statement read.

“After proper check by the pilot and the engineering crew, the aircraft was moved to the apron for detailed inspection and prompt repairs. All passengers of the distressed aeroplane were evacuated safely; no injuries reported, no loss of lives.”

The aircraft was subsequently secured on the apron, with recovery activities completed efficiently.

LASEMA emphasized the collaborative efforts that ensured a smooth resolution, highlighting Nigeria’s improving aviation emergency response capabilities. The agency reassured the public of its constant readiness to handle such incidents.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has acknowledged the event, with investigations expected to determine the exact nature of the technical fault. Qatar Airways has yet to release an official statement on the matter.

This incident underscores the critical importance of rigorous safety protocols, pilot training, and rapid ground response in modern aviation — once again proving that when procedures are followed, even serious mid-air challenges can end safely.

Passengers disembarked without harm, and the focus now shifts to repairs and a full technical assessment before the aircraft returns to service.
