Mr. Mamman Yakubu, in a detailed statement, has revealed what he describes as a deliberate attempt to incite sentiments and orchestrate a media trial aimed at cultivating public animosity and disdain towards the Nigeria Police Force and the esteemed Rev. Dr. David Adamu Gyet.

According to Mr. Yakubu, the duo of Mr. Ibrahim Ahmed Buba, Esq., and Mr. B.Y. Gambo, who purport to be the president of Access to Justice for Women and Children and the legal representative of Mrs. Asabe Danbiki, respectively, have resorted to a fabricated narrative and distortions of fact in the ongoing investigation being conducted by the police at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja.

“This pair, leveraging online media platforms, has propagated spurious allegations against the Deputy Commissioner of Police specializing in gender-based violence at the FCID, Abuja, solely due to her professionalism in the execution of the ongoing investigation, he said.

Mr Yakubu said, in 2002, Rev. Dr. David A. Gyet served as the principal of a theological college in Tofa, Kano State, where a student named Mr. Garba was enrolled.

“Accompanying him was his wife and his younger sister, Asabe, who was a mere 10 years old at the time and occasionally assisted with domestic responsibilities. During her stay with her brother, Asabe commonly aided Rev. Gyet’s wife with chores.

“Recognizing the importance of formal education, Rev. Gyet, an esteemed educationist, felt compelled to provide Asabe with the opportunity to learn. Her elder brother, Mr. Garba, a student of his, sought assistance for Asabe to be enrolled in school. The Gyet family consented, and she was enrolled in a primary school in Jos, Plateau State, successfully completing her studies in 2005.

“Upon returning to her parents for the holidays, however, Asabe was regrettably sent by her family to Lagos, later relocating to Abuja. By a twist of fate, Rev. David Gyet was also transferred to Abuja, and their paths crossed once more at the airport when he was embarking on a pilgrimage with his wife.

“Asabe happened to be at the airport in the company of the family she was employed by. Following his return from the pilgrimage, Asabe would occasionally visit the Reverend’s home in Karu, Abuja, whenever her schedule permitted.

“In 2012, Asabe arrived at Reverend Gyet’s residence with her belongings, distraught over her treatment by the family she worked for. She recounted the excessive workload and revealed that the male head of the household had been sexually molesting her, prompting her decision to leave. Reverend Gyet sought to investigate the family to address the issue, but Asabe declined to provide further information about them. Despite her reluctance, he insisted on meeting the man to confront him. Accompanied by his wife, he drove to Gwarimpa, the location Asabe had indicated.

“However, upon arrival, Asabe became agitated and attempted to exit the moving vehicle. To avoid being misinterpreted, Reverend Gyet allowed her to leave, and she retrieved her bag before walking back to the house. Despite the incident, Asabe continued to visit the Gyets in Karu.

“Subsequently, Rev. Gyet began to hear unsettling rumors of sexual harassment against him from various sources. In response, he contacted the secretary of the board of elders at his church to discuss the troubling allegations. The secretary corroborated that he had also heard similar claims, which prompted the church Board to investigate the matter. Later, the District Church Council (DCC) set up a committee.

“Regrettably, the committee hastily arrived at a conclusion, indicting Reverend Gyet for inappropriate conduct with Asabe without conducting thorough due diligence. He appealed to the church’s headquarters in Jos, where he met with the then-president.

“In a paternal manner, the president posed two thought-provoking questions: “When Jesus was wrongfully accused, how did He respond?” and “Similarly,> System: when Joseph faced false accusations from Potiphar, what was his reaction?”

“Reverend Gyet withdrew his appeal, accepted the terms in good faith, and served the discipline. After a period of time, he was reinstated and resumed his service in Abuja. He later became the local church overseer and was subsequently posted to Kano, where he served meritoriously in the same capacity, earning recognition for his leadership. Twelve years later, as the election for the office of the church president approached, Reverend David Gyet’s name emerged prominently among the contenders.

They initially drafted a letter to the General Secretary of the church through the office of M.A. Lawan & Co., a former Attorney General of Kano State, laden with various false allegations against Reverend Gyet.

“They threatened that if the parties were not summoned by the General Secretary within three days, they would file a petition with the Inspector General of Police regarding alleged rape against the Reverend. The General Secretary granted them an audience, but they failed to appear.

“After rescheduling, they again neglected to attend and instead proceeded to file a suit at the Plateau State High Court, Jos, Suit No: PL/J224/2024, Elder Ali Abdu & 8 others vs Rev Dr. David Adamu Gyet & 7 others.

“Their singular objective was to discredit him before the General Church Council members by suggesting that a pending litigation would preclude his candidacy for the election. This tactic succeeded, as Reverend Gyet was dropped from the race. Once their aim was achieved, they abandoned the case at the High Court along with the petition from their lawyers, Mr Yakubu said.

“The police promptly summoned Reverend Gyet for questioning, whereupon his statement was recorded, and he was granted administrative bail based on self-recognition. Asabe was also invited to participate in the investigation, accompanied by three individuals: a legal practitioner, her uncle, and another individual claiming to be a legal practitioner, who forwarded a threatening SMS to Reverend Gyet, which reads: “Good morning sir. I sincerely appreciate your prayers and calls during our trying moment. May the Lord almighty reward you in abundance. My legal services have been engaged over a matter that has to do with you even though you are doubting the fact that I am even a lawyer. You may and may not be aware, but as a spiritual father, I advise you don’t escalate this matter further by allowing it to die naturally. However, if you insist on using the Police on the innocent girl then we shall resist and defend the vulnerable. Thanks and have a blessed day ahead. B.Y. Gambo Esq.” Mr. Mamman Yakubu states that during the course of the investigation, several facts were revealed, which are within the purview of the police.

“This led to the discovery of forgery by the police, and while trying to elicit answers from Asabe and her uncle, the lawyer became unruly, shouting at the top of his voice to distract the police, claiming he has 21 years at the bar.

“The police then asked him to leave the office since he was obstructing the course of justice, and the other alleged lawyer was left”.

“They orchestrated his transfer from Kano to a remote village known as Kufai, situated in the Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State, despite their awareness that he had recently returned from India, where he underwent surgeries—a location far removed from any medical facilities capable of addressing his needs in the event of a medical emergency.

“He resided there for about two years before being summoned to the headquarters to oversee the church’s NGO activities. This syndicate was displeased by this development and subsequently lodged a petition against his transfer and appointment. Following this, he was elevated to the position of Director of Church-Related Ministry at the headquarters; yet again, the same syndicate submitted a petition in a futile attempt to undermine his credibility, but their efforts proved fruitless”.

It was the same syndicate, according to Mr. Yakubu, that wreaked havoc during the presidential election of the church when they observed he was on the verge of securing victory.

“They insisted on his disqualification, and ultimately, he was eliminated from the contest. They vowed that he would never ascend to prominence and have now opted to adopt a different approach to undermine him and the police”.

Mr. Yakubu questions why they did not vocalize their grievances from the outset when invited. It was only when they realized the tide was turning that they sought to draw public sympathy and ire against the police. Furthermore, it is alleged that the individual known as B.Y. Gambo, who accompanied Asabe, allegedly impersonated someone with his documents to pursue legal education.
