Religious Discrimination, Insecurity, Economic Hardship Taking Toll on Our People, Northern CAN Laments

In a significant gathering aimed at addressing the pressing issues facing Christians in Northern Nigeria, the Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (Northern CAN) convened its National Executive Committee Meeting at the Catholic Social Centre in Kaduna on January 24 and 25, 2025.

The event was graced by the esteemed presence of His Excellency, Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who was warmly welcomed by the Chairman of Northern CAN.

In his opening address, the Chairman acknowledged the vital role of Senator Akume not only as a prominent Christian leader in Northern Nigeria but also as a respected figure on the national and international stage. He commended the Senator for his unwavering commitment to fostering harmony and advocating against discrimination, emphasizing the necessity for unity among the diverse Christian communities across the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The Chairman expressed gratitude for the positive gestures displayed by President during the recent Christmas season, highlighting the provision of palliatives for Christians, the reduction of fuel prices, and the enhancement of security measures during the festive period. “These acts reflect the President’s genuine care for all Nigerians, and we are sincerely appreciative,” he stated, underscoring the importance of governmental support in these challenging times.

However, the meeting also served as a platform to address the myriad challenges that Christians face in Northern Nigeria. The Chairman outlined several key issues that continue to plague the region, including:

1. Insecurity: The persistent threats of banditry, insurgency, and terrorism have destabilized communities, causing widespread displacement and fear.
2. Kidnapping: The rampant kidnappings for ransom have inflicted hardship on families, contributing to a climate of fear and anxiety across the North.
3. Farmer-Herder Conflicts: Ongoing tensions between farmers and herders have not only disrupted agricultural activities but have also posed a significant threat to food security in the region.
4. Religious Discrimination: Christians continue to experience challenges in securing land for church construction and face marginalization regarding political appointments and access to opportunities.
5. Economic Hardship: The rising cost of living, compounded by insecurity and displacement, has made survival increasingly difficult for many families in the region.

The Chairman acknowledged the efforts made by the President and his administration to address these issues but urged for greater intervention to restore peace and stability in Northern Nigeria.

Additionally, he raised concerns regarding political representation, particularly in the context of the North-West Development Commission, where no Christians from the region were appointed. In concluding his speech, the Chairman commended Senator Akume for his dedication to promoting religious harmony and unity amid the challenges facing Northern Nigeria. He expressed hope for continued collaboration, stating, “As we begin this year, we pray for more opportunities to host you and work together. The meeting, attended by distinguished members of the Northern CAN Executive Committee, zonal and state chairmen, secretaries, and leaders of various CAN blocs, served as a critical forum for discussing strategies to enhance the welfare of Christians in the region and to advocate for their rights and opportunities in the broader socio-political landscape of Nigeria.

As the gathering concluded, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose and determination to tackle the challenges ahead, united in their faith and commitment to fostering peace and prosperity in Northern Nigeria.
