The House of Representatives has raised N704,907,578.82 through a half-year salary donation initiative
The initiative, which was proposed by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu in July, aimed to support ordinary Nigerians during these challenging times. Kalu had urged his colleagues to sacrifice 50% of their salaries for six months, emphasizing that “one year is not enough to address the country’s challenges”.
Speaker Tajudeen Abba confirmed the total amount raised during Thursday’s plenary, expressing pride in the House’s collective effort to address the country’s critical issues. This donation is a testament to the House’s commitment to supporting Nigerians affected by the removal of the petrol subsidy.
The presentation of the donation to President Tinubu on December 31, 2024, will mark a significant milestone in the House’s efforts to alleviate economic hardship in Nigeria.
