Save Our Economy: Traders Protest Market Demolition in Kaduna

Traders at the Gonin Gora market in Kaduna State are up in arms over the planned demolition of their market by the Kaduna Markets Development and Management Company (KMDMC). The traders, who locked up their shops in protest, carried placards with messages like “Save us Uba Sani” and “Don’t kill the Economy of Gonin Gora”.

They’re urging the state government to reconsider the demolition plans, which they say will worsen the economic conditions of residents who are already struggling with inflation, unemployment, and high costs of living.

The spokesperson for the Gonin Gora Traders Association, Olatunji Oluwaseun Emmanuel, emphasized that the market is a vital hub for trade and sustenance, providing livelihoods for thousands of families. He appealed to the Governor to intervene and ensure that any redevelopment plans take into account the immediate economic realities and the well-being of the people who rely on the market for survival.

This protest is not an isolated incident, as similar demonstrations have taken place in other parts of the country, such as the protest by traders at the POWA Complex in Lagos, who were also facing demolition threats.

The traders in Kaduna are hoping that their voices will be heard and that the government will take a more consultative and humane approach to redevelopment plans. They’re trusting in the Governor’s commitment to the people of Kaduna State and hoping for swift action to prevent unnecessary suffering.
