Security Teams Foil Suspected Bandit Intrusion: Four Arrested Near Akure Airport

A swift joint security operation has led to the arrest of four suspected bandits near Akure Airport (Olumuyiwa Bernard Aliu Airport) following suspicious activities around the facility’s perimeter, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced on March 15, 2026.

According to FAAN’s official press release, the arrests occurred after a distress alert reported suspicious individuals sighted behind the airport perimeter fence towards the Eleyewo community.

In immediate response, a coordinated team comprising FAAN’s Aviation Security (AVSEC), the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Amotekun, and local community vigilantes launched a search operation in the area.

During the operation, some individuals attempted to flee, but four suspects were successfully apprehended by the joint team.

The suspects have been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for further interrogation and investigation.

FAAN commended the effective collaboration among the aviation security personnel, military branches, police, Amotekun, and community vigilantes, describing their swift action as critical to preventing potential threats.

The agency emphasized that the incident underscores the urgent need to bolster airport perimeter protection.

In light of this and similar concerns, the Federal Government through the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, with support from the Presidency under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accelerated efforts to install modern perimeter fencing and enhanced security infrastructure at airports nationwide.

Work on these upgrades is already progressing in phases to safeguard facilities against unauthorized access and other threats.

FAAN reassured the traveling public and communities hosting airports of its unwavering commitment to safety and security, stating that all measures are being strengthened to maintain secure operations across the country.

The development comes amid ongoing concerns over security around critical infrastructure in various parts of Nigeria, with aviation authorities highlighting proactive measures to counter emerging risks. No further details on the suspects’ identities, motives, or possible connections have been released pending police investigation.
