Senate 2023: Bassey Eko and His Basket of Lies After 20 Years, By Ofem Moses

Under the atmosphere of predictable defeat, hardly anyone is surprised that the PDP Central Senatorial Candidate, Rt. Hon. Bassey Eko Ewa has chosen to dissipate his last breath on profuse smear campaigns targeted at Rt. Hon. Eteng Jonah Williams, the people’s choice for Central Senatorial District senate seat.

While the APC Central Senatorial Candidate, Rt. Hon. Eteng Jonah Williams is going about, focused on issues-based campaigns, articulating his social contract with the electorates, Rt. Hon. Bassey Eko Ewa has chosen the path of puerile campaigns of calumny, for lack of anything tangible to tell the electorates after occupying power for 20 years.

His over 20 years of representation was a colossal waste, where his arrogance of incompetence, clannishness, greed, ignorance, divisive politics, and insensitivity to the common good came to bare. He failed, neglected, and refused to attract any commensurate projects to his federal constituency. He was more or less a chair-warming lawmaker, with no motion to his credit during his 12 years stint in the National Assembly. What then does he have different to offer this time?

Talking about exposure, how do you compare your level of exposure with a man who took you on your first-ever trip outside the shores of this country as a House of Assembly member? There’s also no gain in reminding him that Eteng Jones was already a Master’s degree holder before Bassey Ewa ever dreamt of going to the University.

I am not sure if Bassey ever held a job as a young man. He left the Nigerian Law School straight into politics and has remained there for over 20 years. It’s therefore understood why Bassey’s worldview is deficient since he missed out on the rich experience other young men acquire from trying out a living in differing circumstances.

Under his watch as leader of Yakurr politics, thuggery and bloodshed became the order of the day.

As sitting Speaker of the House of Assembly, he was arrested and detained for 3 nights by then-Governor Donald Duke for instigating political violence in Yakurr that claimed the lives of many young men.

Not long after, As a member of the federal House of Representatives, he was again fingered in a violent clash that erupted in Ekori between supporters of the PDP and the Labour Party. Four people, including his cousin, were killed.

After 20 years of occupying the people’s mandate, Bassey Ewa has this unsavory list of achievements to his credit.

With the current wing of change and political awareness of electorates, the end is imminent for Rt. Bassey Eko Ewa and the people of Central Senatorial District will vehemently reject him on Saturday, February, 25th and no amount of falsehood and basket of lies can redeem him.
