Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) on Wednesday firmly rejected claims of an alleged plot to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio, labeling the reports “false, misleading, and deliberately aimed at sowing disunity” within the upper legislative chamber.
The rebuttal came a day after Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North), a former Senate Chief Whip, told journalists that some lawmakers had previously attempted—though unsuccessfully—to remove Akpabio from office.
Speaking during Tuesday’s media interaction, Kalu disclosed that senior senators intervened to halt the move and maintain stability. “Though there were attempts, we didn’t allow that to happen. That is why I always say we are one big family, and it is not going to happen,” he said, urging colleagues to prioritize legislative duties over internal politicking.
However, addressing the Senate during Wednesday’s plenary, Bamidele categorically denied the existence of any such plan.
“There was no attempt by any of our colleagues, nor any discussion about removing the Senate President,” Bamidele declared. “We have adopted a zero-tolerance policy for distractions because there are urgent national issues demanding our attention. Reports like that are simply meant to create confusion.”
He emphasized the Senate’s unity and focus on constitutional mandates, stating, “The Senate is stable. There is no crisis and no plan to remove anyone. The Red Chamber remains committed to addressing issues that directly impact Nigerians.”
Bamidele’s statement has effectively closed the chapter on the rumored impeachment plot, with no other senators publicly corroborating Kalu’s claims.
The 10th Senate, under Akpabio’s leadership, continues to push forward with key legislative agendas, including budget deliberations and oversight functions.
