Senator Barinada Mpigi, Chairman of Senate Committee on Works, Dies at 64

Nigeria’s Senate has been thrown into mourning following the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District. The lawmaker passed away at the age of 64 on Thursday.

Senator Mpigi, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works. He was born on June 23, 1961.

His political career began in the House of Representatives, where he was first elected in 2011 and re-elected for a second term in 2015 (serving until around 2019).

In 2019, he successfully contested and won a seat in the Senate, representing Rivers South-East. During the Ninth Senate Assembly, he chaired a joint committee investigating crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region.

A source close to the family confirmed his passing to Peoples Gazette, with multiple Nigerian news outlets, including Independent Newspaper and others, reporting the development shortly after.

Details about the cause of death have not been officially disclosed, though some unconfirmed social media reports suggest he had been battling an illness, possibly cancer.

Senator Mpigi was widely regarded as a dedicated legislator focused on infrastructure and Niger Delta issues. His sudden demise has sparked tributes across social media platforms, with many describing him as a committed representative of his people.
