Senegal Claim Dramatic AFCON 2025 Title in Extraordinary Final Against Hosts Morocco

In one of the most remarkable and controversial finals in Africa Cup of Nations history, Senegal secured their second AFCON crown with a thrilling 1-0 extra-time victory over hosts Morocco on Sunday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

The match was defined by unprecedented drama as the Teranga Lions staged a prolonged on-pitch protest, refusing to continue play for over 15 minutes following a contentious late penalty decision, before returning to the field and clinching the title through Pape Gueye’s stunning extra-time winner.

The game remained goalless through regulation time despite several key moments. Yassine Bounou produced an excellent save to deny Iliman Ndiaye in the first half, while Ayoub El Kaabi flashed a shot wide when through on goal.

Tension exploded in stoppage time when Ismaila Sarr’s goal was disallowed for a foul in the buildup. Moments later, Morocco were awarded a penalty after a corner when Brahim Diaz was judged to have been pulled down.

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw responded by calling his players off the pitch in protest against the refereeing decisions. The extraordinary standoff lasted more than 15 minutes until captain Sadio Mané convinced his teammates to return to the field of play.

Upon resumption, Edouard Mendy produced a magnificent save, keeping out Brahim Diaz’s attempted Panenka penalty to force the game into extra time.

The decisive moment arrived early in the additional period when Pape Gueye unleashed a powerful long-range strike that flew into the far corner, leaving goalkeeper Yassine Bounou with no chance and sending the Senegal supporters into raptures.

Senegal defended resolutely through the remaining minutes to hold on for victory, ending Morocco’s unbeaten home record that had stood since 2009 and lifting the AFCON trophy in memorable fashion.

The triumph cements Senegal’s place among Africa’s elite, adding a second continental title to their historic 2021 success.

What began in controversy concluded in celebration — a final that will be remembered for its intensity, drama, courage and, ultimately, Senegalese glory.
