Six Confirmed Dead, Many Injured in Suspected UXO Blast in Hong LGA, Adamawa State

A grim turn has emerged in the Mubang Community explosion incident reported yesterday: at least six people have now been confirmed dead and many injured following a devastating encounter with suspected unexploded ordnance (UXO) that triggered a massive blast in a vehicle.

Initial Emergency Preparedness and Response Team (EPRT) Hong reports from January 14, 2026 (between 16:00–17:00 hours) described six victims injured and receiving treatment at Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Hong.

However, updated information from local authorities and emerging reports indicate that the casualties have escalated tragically, with six fatalities confirmed amid the chaos of the explosion linked to remnants of past conflicts.

The blast, attributed by Hong LGA Chairman Usman Inuwa to Boko Haram insurgents, follows a deadly raid on the same village earlier this month (late December 2025/early January 2026) that claimed 14 lives.

Residents describe the area as plagued by persistent threats from jihadist remnants operating near Sambisa Forest borders, where UXOs and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) continue to endanger civilians long after active combat.

Compounding fears, a separate suspected UXO was identified at the entrance of Kinging Primary School in Yadul District, Uba/Gaya Ward. Nigerian Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams have secured the site and are actively neutralizing the device to protect schoolchildren and the community.

The Adamawa State Police Command, through spokesman SP Suleiman Nguroje, is coordinating with military forces for a full investigation. Community leaders have renewed calls for intensified demining operations, enhanced security patrols, and federal support to address the lingering dangers in Hong LGA.

This latest tragedy highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis in insurgency-affected northeast Nigeria, where unexploded remnants claim innocent lives years after battles. Authorities urge residents to report suspicious objects immediately and avoid high-risk areas. Condolences pour in for the families of the deceased, with prayers for swift recovery for any surviving injured.
