Six Killed in Suspected Cult Clash as Fear Grips Ilorin

At least six persons have been killed in a suspected cult-related attack in the Post Office area of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, sparking fear among residents and prompting a heavy security presence in the city.

The deadly incident reportedly occurred on Sunday night at about 8:00 p.m., leaving several people dead and residents in shock.

When reporters visited the scene on Monday morning, multiple police patrol vehicles were stationed in the area, while many shops along the usually busy corridor remained closed amid heightened tension.

A resident, who identified himself simply as Abdul, said the attackers stormed the area armed with guns and other dangerous weapons, killing six people, including a prominent lotto operator.

“They came with guns and other weapons and carried out the attack. Six people were killed, including the head of lotto operators around the Post Office area,” he said.

According to the resident, the assailants threatened to return after carrying out the attack, further deepening fears among residents.

“While leaving, they boasted that they would come back. This is the fourth deadly incident in this area in recent times. The authorities should ban or stop the lotto activities here,” he added.

Residents alleged that the violence may be connected to a rivalry between the Eiye and Aiye confraternities, although the claim had not been independently verified at the time of filing this report.

Some residents also suggested that the death toll could be higher than the six casualties initially reported.

Confirming the incident, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, said security operatives had responded to the situation and investigations were ongoing.

“Yes, there was a cultist attack last night and some killings, but I will give further details when I leave the scene. I am still there as I speak with you now,” the police commissioner said.

The latest attack has renewed concerns over rising cult-related violence in parts of Ilorin, with residents calling on security agencies to take decisive action to prevent further bloodshed and restore public confidence.
