According to Rashida Muhammed, a relative of the deceased, the incident began with an argument between a soldier attached to the Joint Military/Police Operation Safe Haven and policemen at a checkpoint. The soldier reportedly refused to cooperate, leading to a commotion.

Approximately an hour later, the soldier returned with two colleagues, identified as Private Yakubu Yahuza (23NA/85/10185) and Private Godspower Gabriel (23NA/84/5654), who were partially dressed in military uniforms and armed with rifles. Without warning, Constable Ukasha was shot in the chest and later pronounced dead at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH).

Eyewitnesses reported that as the soldiers attempted to flee, local residents apprehended one of them, Private Usman Mubarak (23NA/84/5346), until police reinforcements arrived. The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the incident, with the detained soldiers now in custody.

Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu has called for calm among his officers, emphasizing a thorough investigation. In a statement, CSP Mohammed Ahmed Wakil, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, detailed that the assault occurred during a routine patrol led by Inspector Hussaini Samaila near Padimo Hotel. A team of homicide investigators has been tasked with conducting a meticulous probe to ensure justice is served.

The military has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. The deceased’s remains have been transferred to the mortuary, and the investigation continues as authorities work to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event.

This incident highlights the fragile dynamics between security agencies in Nigeria, raising urgent questions about coordination and accountability in joint operations.
