Southern, Middle Belt Leaders Say Buhari’s Death Calls for National Reflection, Not Just Mourning

The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) has called for a period of national introspection following the death of former Nigerian President and military ruler, General Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR), who passed away on June 14, 2025, at the age of 82. In a powerful statement issued on Sunday, the Forum urged Nigerians to move beyond ceremonial mourning and critically assess Buhari’s complex legacy and its implications for the nation’s future.

Signed by prominent regional leaders, including HRM Oba Oladipo Olaitan (Afenifere), Dr. Bitrus Pogu (Middle Belt Forum), Senator John Azuta-Mbata (Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide), and Ambassador Godknows Igali (PANDEF), the statement described Buhari’s death as a moment to evaluate Nigeria’s leadership trajectory.

“His passing was received with sadness but also with sober reflection,” the Forum noted, emphasizing the need to examine the lasting impact of Buhari’s tenure as military head of state (1983–1985) and two-term elected president (2015–2023).

The SMBLF praised Buhari’s resilience in achieving the presidency in 2015 after three unsuccessful attempts, calling it a “historic” milestone that demonstrated his commitment to Nigeria’s democratic process.

However, the group did not shy away from addressing the controversies of his civilian administration. “His eight-year presidency was marked by significant challenges, including widespread insecurity, economic instability, and deepening ethnic divisions,” the statement read, noting that Buhari’s leadership remains a polarizing subject in Nigeria’s modern history.

Despite these critiques, the Forum acknowledged Buhari’s indelible mark on Nigeria’s democratic journey, stating, “His name will forever occupy a space in our nation’s story, though the full measure of his legacy is still being written.” The SMBLF extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family and the nation, praying for his soul to find “eternal peace with his Maker.”

As Nigeria observes a public holiday on Tuesday to honor the late leader, the Forum’s call for reflection over mere mourning sets the tone for a broader national conversation about Buhari’s legacy and the path forward for the country.
