The striking Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) of the Adamawa State University (ADSU) has decried the poor funding of the university and described as unacceptable the effecting of deductions from staff salaries by the state government but without remitting the same to the union coffers.
Addressing the press Monday in Yola, the branch chairman of SSANU, Mr James Fwah, said, “Over the years, the institution has been underfunded and things were grinding to a halt.
“The union studied with dismay the the severe underfunding in the previous years and more disturbing in the recent; this has left the university with piles of unsettle staff claims and managerial expenses.
“Apart from the dwindling salary payments, the university cannot sustain its overhead expenses.
“Presently, the university is almost at standstill unless urgent steps are taken. We therefore demand that funding profile of the university as enshrined in the university law be implemented,” The Chairman said.
The Senior Staff Union also lamented what it described as reluctance of the management towards staff promotion and confirmation which it said has affected members welfare and the progress of the university.
SSANU also called for the payment of Earned Allowance, adding that the university is the only one yet to implement scheme the North East.
The Union also said that the present pension scheme implemented in the university is contrary to the one approved by the law setting up the university and called for the stoppage of the pension deduction until all grey areas were resolved.
“The union is peeved that deductions from staff salaries were affected and not remitted to union coffers for several years.
“This lack of remittance is unacceptable as it has continued to take its toll on our members welfare.
“We therefore demand for the immediate settlement of all unremitted union dues.”The Senior Staff Union Has Embarked On An Indefinite Strike Action Press Home Its demand.
