A prominent stakeholder in Adamawa State, Hamisu Idris Medugu, has urged the North East Development Commission (NEDC) and the Ministry of Works to prioritize the Adamawa North area in addressing the recurring flood disasters that have devastated the region.
He specifically cited the delayed construction of roads and bridges in Michika Local Government area, which has left the community vulnerable to flooding
Medugu, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), attributed the persistent flooding to the failure of the Minister of Works, Senator Engr Nweze David Umahi, to ensure proper supervision and execution of contracts.
He specifically cited the delayed construction of roads and bridges in Michika Local Government area, which has left the community vulnerable to flooding.
Medugu expressed concern over the lack of transparency in the awarding of contracts, stating that the new contractors handling the work are unknown to the local community.
He called on the Adamawa State government to monitor the implementation of federal government contracts in the Northern Senatorial District.
The stakeholder warned that the failure to address the deteriorating bridges in Michika and Madagali Local Government areas could lead to a severe flood disaster in the coming weeks. He advised the state government to collaborate with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to provide adequate water channels.
Medugu also appealed to Vice President Kashim Shettima to intervene in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Maiduguri-Adamawa federal highway, particularly the major bridges.
He criticized the NEDC for neglecting the entire Northern Adamawa senatorial district, citing the example of Shuwa community in Madagali Local Government area, which was one of the first to be attacked by Boko Haram but has received no assistance from the commission.
Medugu concluded by calling on the NEDC, Ministry of Works, and State Government to unite in efforts to eradicate the yearly flood disasters in Adamawa State.
