Strike: Judiciary staff, polytechnic lecturers fail to attend meeting with FG
The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), on Thursday, failed to honour the invitation of the Federal Government to attend separate meetings in order to resolve ongoing strikes.

An official of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, in a chat with our correspondent, when asked why the meetings were postponed, said the stakeholders were absent.

“Sorry, the stakeholders were not around,” the official said in a WhatsApp message sent to Daily Trust.

The spokesman of the Ministry, Charles Akpan, also confirmed in a text message that the meetings had been shelved.

When asked why the meetings were postponed, he simply said, “I was not informed by my Principal.”

The striking Polytechnic workers are demanding the implementation of the 2014 NEEDS Report, the release of revitalisation fund to the sector, reconstitution of governing councils in federal polytechnics and state-owned institutions, among other things.

JUSUN, on the other hand, is asking for financial autonomy for the judiciary and the implementation of Executive Order 10 signed by President Muhammdu Buhari in May last year.

The polytechnics and the courts have been shut down for days following the strike action by the lecturers and the judicial workers.

Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, has disclosed that no fewer than 10 persons have died and 500 others hospitalised after drinking flavoured drinks containing citric acid in Kano.

He said 50 among those hospitalized are undergoing kidney-related treatment arising from complications related to the consumption of flavoured drinks.

Speaking in a video, which was made available to newsmen in Kano State Thursday, the Commissioner explained that the affected persons are being treated in government hospitals.

The commissioner cautioned residents on the consumption of juice during the period of Ramadan.

“As you are aware, the Ministry of Health had in the recent past announced the outbreak of a strange disease traceable to the consumption of substandard juice.

“The consumption of these fake or substandard products have telling effects on the kidney, and vital organs of the body,” he said.

The Consumer Protection Council has been investigating the incident, conducting searches in Kano markets and making seizures.

It was gathered the batches of some of the products show that the drinks had expired over a year ago.

Tsanyawa, in his one minute, 21 seconds video message, said: ”As you are aware, the Ministry of Health had in the recent past announced the outbreak of a strange disease traceable to the consumption of substandard juices.

“The consumption of these fake or substandard products have telling effects on the kidney, and vital organs of the body.”

The Consumer Protection Council has been investigating the incident, conducting searches in Kano markets and making seizures.
