Suspected Youths Set 18 Houses Ablaze in Taraba Community

Suspected youths have set ablaze at least 18 thatched houses in Tompo Village, Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State, police sources confirmed on Monday.

The attack took place in the early hours of March 9, around 1:00 a.m., according to a report from resident Zaki Thomas Yamusa of Army Gate 2.

Sources indicate the attackers, believed to be youths speaking the Kuteb language, targeted homes belonging to Tiv residents who had recently returned to the village.

Tompo Village had remained largely deserted for years due to a long-standing crisis between Tiv and Kuteb communities that began in 2006. However, Tiv residents reportedly returned in 2026 following a peace meeting with the Chief of Jenuwa Gida.

During the incident, the attackers burned down 18 round thatched houses, destroying food grains, mobile phones, and other valuables. No casualties were reported.

A police detective team visited the scene, took photographs, and began preliminary investigations.

Village heads from the affected communities have been invited by the police to help prevent further escalation.

Intelligence efforts have been activated, and surveillance teams deployed to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The Taraba State Police Command stated that investigations are ongoing, with intensified measures to stop the situation from developing into a broader communal crisis.
