The newly inaugurated EXCO of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Taraba State chapter has advocated for media collaboration towards the revitalization of sports in Taraba.
The Chairman, Comr. Joachim Dangana made the plea during a courtesy visits to the General Managers of Taraba State Broadcasting Service (TSBS), Engr. Theophilus Andeyarka and his counterpart of the Taraba Television (TTV), Engr. Bryson Ben on Tuesday as part of their first major function since they took office.
At the Taraba State Broadcasting Service (TSBS), the SWAN Chairman told the management that the association was out to rescue sports in the State, which he said it is only going to be possible with the support of the media.
In his response, the General Manager, Taraba Radio Corporation, Engr. Theophilus Andeyarka, told members of the association to endeavour to do something different.
“You cannot just sit and wait for organizers to organize sports for you in the State. Now that you are newly elected, there must be change. If you don’t say it nobody will say it.You must get involved in the organization of sports in the State. Try to put in efforts,” he advised.
At the Taraba Television Corporation, Comr. Joachim Dangana, also told the Management that sports was at its low in state and there was need to reinvigorate it.
He described sports as a driving force in every society and stressed the need for media houses to support SWAN in its advocacy to reposition sports sector in the State.
On his part, the General Manager, Taraba Television, Engr. Bryson Ben who congratulated the Exco on their election said, that the media in Taraba is dynamic and ought to go with the trends of the time.
According to him, sports programs should not only be on print but also on television and urged the association to laiase with producers to introduce phone in sports program on television which will also provide an avenue for the public to contribute.
” We have a sports program, so with your coming, i believe the producer of the program is part of you, so it is also your duty for you to help him, initiate ideas into him, so that sports writing should not be only on print, we want to see you vividly on television” Gm TTV emphasized.
Engr. Bryson Ben however, attributed inadequate of good sports talents now in the state to lack of sporting facilities in secondary schools, therefore, advocated for the state government to make it a policy for anybody that will establish a school must provide at least a field for sports before granting license to operate.
