Tragedy struck in Ogun State yesterday when a tanker loaded with premium motor spirit fell and exploded in the Ibafo area, along the Lagos/Ibadan expressway. Eyewitnesses claim the driver dozed off at the wheel, lost control, and crashed, causing the tanker to fall and eventually erupt in flames.
The fire spread rapidly, engulfing multiple vehicles parked at a nearby filling station. Despite the prompt response of the Ogun State Fire Service, several vehicles were burnt to ashes. Fortunately, no lives were lost, but many individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The impact of the fire was devastating, with nearby buildings suffering shattered windows, damaged roofs, and cracked walls. The petrol spill even spread to a community about a kilometer away through a drainage system.
Confirming the incident, Babatunde Akinbiyi, Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State-owned Traffic Compliance and Enforcement, stated that the situation was eventually brought under control, but not before the fire had wreaked havoc on the area.
